The North Carolina Institute of Education was founded on 22 June 1831 by University of North Carolina professors and state leaders of the public school movement. The purpose of the Institute was "to diffuse knowledge on the subject of education and by every proper means to improve the condition of the common schools and other literary institutions of our state." The University of North Carolina was chartered by the state's General Assembly in 1789. Its first student was admitted in 1795. The governing body of the University, from its founding until 1932, was a forty-member Board of Trustees elected by the General Assembly.
